Who are the Rangeless Riders?
Established in 2002 and having been SASS
affiliated from day one, the Rangeless Riders have grown from seven
dedicated cowboys. In fact, this organization has developed its own
Ladies Auxiliary.
These members have established and currently
run the Boy Scout Venture Crew 2245 of the Trails West Council. While
chartered by the parent organization of the Highland Pistol and Rifle Club
(HPRC), the majority of its members and leaders are affiliated with the
Rangeless Riders.
Where do they shoot?
Located about thirty miles from St. Louis, MO,
the parent organization of the Highland Pistol and Rifle Club provides
services for almost all disciplines of shooting sports including ATA
registered Trap, Skeet, NRA training, Hunter Safety courses, IDPA, Black
powder, and Air Rifle. This club has sponsored an SASS affiliated
monthly match since February, 2002.
The facilities include a 100 yard rifle range,
used for temporary CAS stages, as well as Cowboy trap, and Cowboy Skeet.
During the winter months, the cowboys shoot stages in a 25 yard climate
controlled indoor range that is attached to the clubhouse.
The clubhouse is a 5000 square foot climate
controlled meeting hall with a fire place, full service kitchen, and
working bar. (Closed during SASS events.)
The crown jewel of this club, as it relates to
CAS, is its newly opened (September, 2007) "Cowboy Village".
This range has room enough for five stages with a 25 yard berm. The
structures were built entirely with the labor from within the ranks of the
Rangeless Riders, and funded entirely with monies raised on their own.
This new village now doubles the capacity of the cowboy action facilities
allowing up to ten stages. This newly acquired asset now gives the
club the option to initiate a two day annual match in 2008.
What do they do?
The Rangeless Riders host monthly matches 11
months of the year from February through December. January is
reserved for their annual Christmas party. All Rangeless
Rider events are held at their home club including the Christmas party.
In 2007, the Rangeless Riders Red Hat Auxiliary sponsored two additional
benefit events to assist two young SASS members, Wolf Creek Jake and
Frisco Kim.
The benevolent reputation for the Rangeless
Riders began in November and December of 2002 when the Rangeless Riders
raised money to assist a local child with leukemia and again in February
on 2003 when they raised money for the St. Louis Lambert Airport USO.
In Addition to activities at the home facility,
the Rangeless Riders have provided assistance to other SASS affiliated
organizations and its members within the local area. Not only were the Rangeless Riders instrumental in nominating three local SASS
members for the title of SASS Regulator, they initiated the process and
were able to convince the nomination committee to award the title to all
who were nominated. In February 2003, the Rangeless Riders assisted
the Nason Mining Company Regulators by allowing the use of their
facilities when this displaced SASS affiliated club was looking for a new
home.
This attitude of assistance extends outside of
SASS. In April, 2005, the Rangeless Rider members of the HPRC did
the same for the IDPA match of the Caseyville Rifle and Pistol Club when
they were displaced from their home range.
In July of 2005, the Rangeless Riders built a
12' by 12' temporary jail building for use at the Randolph County Ruckus,
the SASS Illinois State Championship and provided the manpower to setup
and wrote the scenario for the stage. In addition, the Rangeless
Riders provided services as waddies for this event with three members
spending an entire week at the facility.
In 2006, the performance of the Rangeless
Riders was again repeated at the Randolph County Ruckus by the same
individuals. In addition, a scale model cannon was loaned by a
Rangeless Rider as a key prop to another stage at the same event.
More recently, the Rangeless Riders provided
significant assistance to the Macoupin County Regulators during the 2007
Spring Roundup; the SASS Illinois State Championship. Almost all
active members of the Rangeless Riders participated on a competitor's
level, with a significant number providing the man-power in setting up and
tearing down of target (several of which were loaned to the Macoupin
County Regulators by the Rangeless Riders) and providing services as Stage
Marshals. Venture Crew 2245 assisted in directing automobile traffic
and served food to the 300 participants as one of only two food service
vendors for the event. Even the Cowboy Chronicle article for this
event was written by a Rangeless Rider.
